(Idea from Becky in Florida) I taught this last Sunday by using "who, what, when, where, why, how" wordstrips posted on the board. Then I had about a dozen phrases from the song on wordstrips in a mixed up order on the board. I sang the song and asked them to look for matches. Then we placed a few and sang it again. We ran out of time before we were done, but I had their attention the whole time. This was for the senior Primary.
For the junior Primary I just asked a question, sang part of the song, asked another question, sang another section, etc. My main idea for them was to just introduce the four Easter songs we wanted, and that worked well too. I had considered asked them to whisper sing the song, but our bishopric counselor used that method in opening exercises, so I decided to save it.
Here are some of the phrases I used "on Easter morn" "our Savior and our King" "rejoice, rejoice", "from the grave" "he died" "he rose" "show his love" Some of the phrases could be placed in multiple spots, which led to a good discussion. Bonnie writes, "I started teaching this song to my primary this past week. I used the following story (told in "A Children's Songbook Companion" as I began my introduction: On January 13, 1982, an airplane crashed into a bridge in Washington, D.C., and then plunged into the icy Potomac River. Many people were killed, but six people hung onto the plane's tail while a helicopter threw them a life-preserer ring. The water was icy cold, and it was hard to hang onto the planes tail. These people were afraid they might die before their turn came to grab the life preserver and be carried to safety. But every time the rescuers lowered the life preserver to one man, he passed it onto someone else so that they could be rescued. He did this until everyone around him had been rescued, and then he could not hold on any longer. When the helicopter came back to get him, he had slipped under the water. He died before anyone could save him. (Adapted from "The man in the Water," Time, 25 Jan, p. 86) (I also did a google search on this and found additional details I shared. I remember this day, I was surprised to find out it was 29 years ago)
- Why do you think he kept passing the life preserver? (I was touched when one teacher answered this question by saying "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his brother")
You can then express your feelings about the courage and love it would take to be able to give your life for others as this man did.
- There is someone else who has given his life for you...Introduce the song...
I used the questions "why", "who", "where", "who", & "when" to teach the song, and used some of the other ideas I have read about online. I only taught the first 1/2 of the song last Sunday. The Sr. picked it up very quickly and were singing it w/o any help by the end of singing time."
