GAMES: After explaining that the Holy Ghost talks to us in a still small voice, we played a game similar to Simon Says were the person leading spoke in a quiet voice while the others did the actions the leader asked them to do. We then illustrated how sin and/or Satan can make it hard to listen to the voice by having my husband talk to our son in a loud voice, while I was telling him the right actions to do. Amazingly, he still listened to my voice and I think grasped the concept. (Idea by Wendy James / ga04102007)

Show the children a small item you will hide for this game. Have one child leave the group for a moment while you hide the item. When the child returns, explain that he or she must listen carefully to find the object. Use a quiet noise, such as lightly tapping a pencil, gently clapping your hands, or humming a song, to show the child which way to turn to look for the hidden object. Gently tap when the child looks in the correct direction. Tap more quickly (or hum louder) as the child moves closer to the hiding place, until the item is found. Repeat the activity, giving another child an opportunity to look for the object, as often as desired. Explain to the children that they may be guided in their lives by listening to the still, small voice of the Holy Ghost. Remind them that the Holy Ghost does not always speak out loud. Sometimes he gives us ideas or feelings, such as a warm feeling when we do something right or a bad feeling when we do (or want to do) something wrong. We must pay careful attention to know what the Holy Ghost is telling us to do. (Taken from the Primary 2 Manual)

LESSON HELPS: How the Holy Ghost Helps You
Inviting the Holy Ghost - Set up a small table at the front with a table cloth and dishes, an elegant dinner for 2 kind of thing. I will put a nice invitation on one of the plates and at the beginning I will let them know that I want President Hinckley to come and dine with me. Show them that I made out the invitation and the time is set for some time in the middle of the lesson. When he doesn't show up I will ask them why he wouldn't come! I wanted him to! I will tell them, "Look! I wrote this out for him! I told him I wanted him here...." They will get that I am still holding the invitation....that he wasn't ever actually invited! I wanted him to come, but the invitation has to be extended, or it just isn't going to do any good. Then go into how idea when inviting the Holy Ghost. (Idea by Misty Cox)

Bring in some bubbles. Explain that each bubble is filled with air. You can't see the air but you know it's there because it gives the bubble its shape. Jesus gave us the gift of the Holy Ghost after we were baptized. While we cannot see Him, we know He is there because He affects us and the things around us. We can see Him by what He does. He wants to be a part of our lives and help us make right choices. We should always strive to be worthy of His companionship.

The Holy Ghost speaks softly
PREPARED TALKS: I just gave a talk at a baptism on the Holy Ghost that went really well. The baptism was for an 11 year old boy and his mother. They were baptized together. I brought 2 identical white paper bags with tissue paper. One had fun candy in it and the other had mouse traps. I asked the boy to pick one bag that he wanted to keep, not knowing the contents inside either bag. He wasn't sure which one to pick, because they both looked the same. So, I told him he could ask his mom for help. She didn't know which one to pick either. But then I changed it up and let the mom peek and then the boy asked the mom again. This time, she knew which one to pick. I went on to explain that this is how the Holy Ghost works. We need to ask him to help us and that he will always lead us down the right path. He trusted his mom to give him the right answer, just as he should trust Heavenly Father. Then the boy got to keep the bag with candy and I'll save the one with mouse traps for another talk! "I just went to a childs baptism and the grandmother gave an excellent talk on the holy ghost. She had a taken a toy that was the boys that was now broken. She started off explaining how many of the things we receive in this life don't last. But today he would receive something that not only would last but would get better over time as he learned to use it and recognize it. She then had a basket of things which represented different aspects ofnthe holy ghost...a blanket...to comfort us, a packet of lifesavers..how the holy ghost can warn us, she had a navigation tool..how he can guide us in decisions we make, a small horn to warn is of danger....it was simple, but had everyones attention and it's a talk I will remember for a long time." The Best of Friends - The Holy Ghost can be our companion just like in this story.
The Candle Story - Use this example to show that with our "light", all can feel of God's love
The Comforter - There is a cute story about a little girl getting ready to be baptized and worried about a "ghost" being her constant companion. She learns what a comforter is when she is sent to the closet to get a quilt for her grandmother. Here's a thought. A fun project for parents or the primary to do might be for each child or class have a quilt square and put together a comforter and donate it to a homeless shelter.
