LESSON HELPS:
Family Councils - A conversation with Elder & Sister Ballard (Scroll Down)
First we talked about families. As the children listed off people in their family (me, mom, dad, cousins, uncle, etc.) I wrote them on strips of paper. Then we arranged the strips on the board like a family tree. Finally, we talked about how the temple links the family together forever and as we talked, I took the strips of paper and made rings and linked them together using temple stickers. Each child then got several strips of paper to write on and make their own chains to take home. They even came up with the idea of linking all their chains together to make an even bigger one and I was able to talk about us all being a big spiritual family and part of Heavenly Father and Jesus' family. Jesus was one of the names they gave me for the paper chain. (Idea shared by Carolyn Frances / ga06082008)

Strengthening Our Family
The recipe to a happy home
Before class, I used napkins and pieces of construction paper and 'trashed' the room. By turning over the table and scattering the chairs around, I really did a number on it! :) When the girls came in, they immediately started commenting about how 'trashed' the room looked. Then, I plopped down in my chair and said that I had the worst night. My children were sick and had been really whinny all night. My daughter kept coughing and I kept telling her to stop because she was keeping me awake. My husband wouldn't help out and was a pain, too. (all false, but you get the idea) ... Essentially, 'trashing' my relationships with my family in front of the girls. After that, I based the whole lesson on 'trashing' relationships and how easy it is to do it without realizing it. I planned on using my own personal stories instead of the story/discussion section in the lesson and did that first. We read D&C 108:7 and talked about each relationship we have in our families. (i.e. father /daughter, sister/brother, etc.) The counselor over us also shared a short slide-show about her family and how close they are, how they've had ups and downs and how they've maintained their closeness through the years (her boys are 18 and 16, so I think they could relate very well to it). Our girls have journals and I asked them to journal about something they could change in order to support their family members. I kept referring back to the 'trashed' room and related their desire to clean it or leave it to how relationships can end because of 'trashing.' It was a great lesson and the girls were very attentive and helpful. (Idea by Lauren Brown of Orem , Utah / ga03052009)
LeNell writes, "This is a skit I wrote for this lesson. It's a bit cheesy but it's a way to change up the lesson and let the girls be involved. Please insert the name of your own town where it says (your town)." (pdf) (Word) (Files shared by LeNell Heywood / ga03152012)
Sometimes too what I do for lessons is get something from their parents and how it relates to the lesson. Like on this lesson I asked each parents to describe what Christ-like attributes their daughters had and what they needed to improve on. I read them in class and had the girls guess which one their parents wrote. The girls were VERY surprised at how well thought of their parents viewed them. It was a VERY successful lesson. The girls loved hearing the stuff their parents said about them. (by Danielle Howell)

The importance of helping and supporting family and friends. Ask child to lift chair by one of its legs, using only one hand. Then have him ask three friends to help, each lifting different leg of chair. When all work together, chair is easy to lift. (Taken from the May 1989 Friend Magazine)
Coming Closer Together
Family Unity and Puzzles
I decided to take an old Jenga game and attach a piece of paper to each block that lists a way which the girls can support their family members. (i.e. Go to your sisters dance recital. Ask you dad how his day at work was. Offer to help your mom cook dinner etc.) I explained that the Jenga tower was representative of our home. Each time we took out a different block our home became weaker. But if we strive to support and love our family members our family stays strong. (Idea by Fran Mccloskey / ga03142009)
I think the perfect object lesson would be the one where you give one of them a twig to break in half (which of course they can) and then give them 6 or 8 tied together and ask them to break it apart (which of course they can't). When we're bound together supporting each other we can't be "broken". (Idea by Stephanie)
