CHILD: Poem
I like to hear at Easter
When gentle grownups tells
The meaning of this season
And things they know so well.
For as I sit and listen.
It helps me understand
The reason for Christ's dying --
A nailprint in each hand.
God chose Him as our Savior
And sent Him from above
So He could teach His gospel
Of sacrifices and love.
So all the Alleluias
At Easter in the Spring
Are hymns of praise to Jesus
When men rejoice and sing.
-- Bessie Saunders Spence
NARRATOR: Easter is a special time to think about Jesus' life and his atoning sacrifice on the cross and in the Garden of Gethsemane, that we might all be resurrected. Let's learn what happened during Jesus' last week on earth.
CHILD #1: Holds a picture of the Triumphal entry (Picture OQ#1734) and reads
Luke 19:29-38.
NARRATOR: The Triumphal entry was on a Sunday. On Monday the Savior went to the temple and drove out the money changers. He felt that these people were not being reverent in the temple and were not doing what Heavenly Father wanted them to do.
CHILD #2: Holds picture of the clearing of the temple (Picture OQ#1632) and reads
Mark 11:15-19.
NARRATOR: Tuesday and Wednesday of the last week of Jesus' life, He spent a lot of time in the temple teaching parables (which are stories with a lesson). He answered questions about the gospel and challenged Jewish leaders who were called Pharisees. One of the stories He taught was the parable of the Ten Virgins.
CHILD #3: Holds a picture of the Ten Virgins (Picture OQ#1530) and reads
Matthew 25:1-13.
NARRATOR: On Thursday evening Jesus ate the last supper with His disciples.
CHILD #4: Holds a picture of the last supper (Picture OQ#1745) and reads
Luke 22:19-20.
NARRATOR: Later Thursday evening Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane where He sweat blood from each pore on His body. He suffered and atoned for our sins if we will but repent. Roman soldiers came and arrested Him when Judas betrayed Him with a kiss.
CHILD #5: Holds picture of the Garden of Gethsemane (Picture OQ#1756) and reas
Matthew 26:36-39. Also have the child read about the betrayal found in
Luke 22:47-48.
NARRATOR: The Roman soldiers took Jesus to the Jewish and High Priests and to the Roman Govenor where He was tried and was falsely accused of doing wrong and sentenced to be crucified on Friday.
CHILD #6: Holds a picture of the crucifixion (Picture OQ#179A) and reads
Luke 23: 33-34, 38, 46.
NARRATOR: After Jesus died, His body was taken down off the cross and was laid in a tomb.
CHILD #7: Holds a picture of the burial of Jesus (Picture OQ#1803) and reads
Luke 23:50-53.
NARRATOR: On Sunday morning Jesus the Christ, Savior of all men, was resurrected. Because He was resurrected each one of us will also be resurrected. This is the greatest gift the Savior could give to each one of us. He died for us and was resurrected because He loves each one of us.
CHILD #8: Holds picture of the resurrection (Picture OQ#187A) and reads
Luke 24:1-3, 6-7.
