Jean writes, "Dolphins live in the water, but they don't breath water, they breath air. Like dolphins we live in the world, but we don't breath “world”.
Dolphins truly are beautiful creatures. Air gives the dolphin the strength to swim quickly and surely. A dolphin also has the ability to make clear and correct decisions when it has air. It feels peaceful and confident when it is breathing regularly and inhaling deeply.
Reading our scriptures, prayer, attending our meetings, temple service, and especially partaking of the sacrament are our “Air”. This “air” is what allows us to safely navigate the increasingly polluted waters that we live in. We have an increased ability to make clear and correct decisions. We feel peaceful and confident no matter what storms are raging around us when we “breath” that spiritual air. It is very important to “breath” regularly and to really inhale (to absorb it and really take it in). Frequently in the scriptures the Lord refers to “rest” (Matt 11:28,-29; Jacob 1:7; Alma 13:6 to name a few)...that is what our air is.."rest of the Lord"...those things that give us spiritual “rest”. The Sabbath is the day of rest"!
The Lord has set a side an entire day for us to rejuvenate and take the opportunity to really “breathe” air, this day is called the Sabbath. Somehow, we can “surface” (attend sacrament meeting, pray, etc) and not really inhale the air that is there. What a waste! Don't surface and hold your breath, breath! Inhale! The most important thing that we do in observing the sabbath is partaking of the sacrament. THAT IS AIR!!!!
Satan wants us to get distracted and to “hold our breath”. He tells us that the peace and strength that we are struggling for is found deeper in the water. “Swim deeper” he says, which is what we see the fish around us doing...but we breath air! We are a peculiar treasure! We are dolphins! Swimming deeper we can drown. (Which is what Satan wants, he wants to destroy us!) The Lord invites us to “surface” to come up for the spiritual air that we not only live on but will strengthen and increase our abilities to swim! We can't swim effectively or make clear decisions when we are just seeing how long we can "hold our breath"! Surface!!!! Inhale!!!!
The Lord didn't give us the Sabbath to sabotage us, or give us one more thing to do. He gives us the Sabbath, the Sacrament, the Scriptures so we can breath! So we can accomplish the things that he knows we need to get done in our day and in our weeks...but we NEED to take those opportunities to breath! Regularly, and deeply!
Like athletes, what we take in and how we use our time greatly affects our performance. There are many “good, better, and best” choices available for our Sabbath day worship. It is important to follow the spirit so we get the best quality “air”, and practice to make our “breathing” more effective and the MOST beneficial to our lives. It takes practice to truly inhale!
Just a side note, Dolphins really are impressive, graceful creatures! They have the ability to "see" in the water by feeling (echolocation!) and they are not only not afraid of the sharks, but they are one of the few creatures that can kill a shark! All applicable to the beautiful YW we teach who are negotiating the increasingly polluted waters they swim in!"
