We just finished our June Enrichment Night on Service. This was a hard one to think of because we wanted to do something in the community since with the RS Conf we had just done a bunch of quilts and knitting items. Our information posters said in large letters, "Dinner or a Manicure," then, "Choose ye this day HOW ye will serve." Underneath that we had the information on the two different places we were going to go and what we were going to do. On the two Sundays prior to Enrichment Night we passed around sign-ups for dinner and bottles of nail polish for manicures, that way we knew we had the least amount of people needed for each activity. We met at the church at 6:00 and then divided into two groups. Those who had signed up to bring dinner took their items and went to the Ronald McDonald House that is on our side of town. There said that there weren't very many people at the house for dinner, which is really common because the parents will often stay in the hospital with their children during visiting hours. There were some there though, and the sisters that went got to visit with them over dinner. The other group heard some quick tips from a sister in our ward who does nails and used to work in a retirement home. She quickly told them how to rub the elderly's hands gently and generally just how to give a manicure to them. The group then went to Silver Hills Assisted Living Home. There were 10 ladies there prepared to get their nails done. We took nail polish remover, cotton balls, sensitive skin lotion, wooden emery boards and orange sticks. The sisters each brought one of their bottles of nail polish. The Sunday before Enrichment Night when we gave the announcement we wanted the sisters to understand what a great opportunity this was to serve and to open their hearts to Christ. The Bishop was in Relief Society that week and when he got up to do his lesson he started with how when his grandmother was older and unable to do many things, especially with her hands, her visiting teacher would come over and visit while she painted her nails. He said that his grandmother would then show those nails off to anyone she met for the next week, she was so happy and proud of them. That small service made this elderly woman feel so good about herself.
